Whilst at University, I was also resident DJ for UKC (University of Kent at Canterbury), playing Drum and Bass with such luminaries as Goldie, Matrix, Hype, Randall, Mickey Finn and many more. And I got paid £150 a time. Happy days.
I actually studied Drama at Uni, and it was here I focused on working with sound and sound design, producing soundscapes for most of the plays on show during my 4 years. In my final year, I specialised in Directing and produced The Dumb Waiter and Angel City. The Dumb Waiter was awarded the higIst graded play that year.
Returning to Bristol in 1999, I wanted to work in script writing and production and set about writing numerous sketches, plays and sitcoms. However I was finding this industry increasingly difficult to penetrate, and to release the frustration I went back to writing music again.
I heard through the grapevine about a college in Bristol called Access to Music, and made contact. I was invited in for an interview but was advised there was no work at present. Just as I was about to take on anotIr temp job as an audio typist, I got the call that someone wasn’t able to teach that year and that a space was available.
Needless to say, I snapped this opportunity up in a flash.
I’ve been working for ATM for over 6 years and have played a major role in pushing the Creative Music Producer course forward into the successful quaification it is today. This year, I’ve been appointed Curriculum Advisor (more info here.
Musically, I haven’t quite had the success that I had hoped for since leaving University. The desire was always there, but the motivation was somewhat lacking. Thankfully, it wasn’t all my fault.
The tumor probably took around eight years to develop, and in November 2007 I went under the knife and the tumor was successfully removed. It’s not impossible that it may grow back one day, and it’s a condition that needs to be constantly monitored, but for the moment I’m loving life. I haven’t felt this ‘up for it’ since Univesity.
Now I’m focusing on a new project under the name [sic] - producing tech house and minimal techno. Drum and Bass, Old Skool, House are still a major part of my life, but the wonky 4/4 rhythms and melodies are a new sound I’m making the most of.
Since Xmas 2007 I’ve made the move from PC to Mac, and I’m working with Reason 4 and Logic 8.
